Wisdom Teeth Aren’t Always Wisely Positioned

Wisdom Teeth X-rayWe call them wisdom teeth because they are the last of your adult teeth to erupt, usually between the ages of 17 and 25. The problem with wisdom teeth (called ‘third molars’ in dental circles) is that they’re located at the back of your mouth in top and bottom jaws, and in many cases, there simply isn’t enough remaining room back there to accommodate them. In other cases, they decide to come in horizontally instead of vertically and can begin to sabotage you. When they’re ‘impacted’ like this, they can contribute to infection, cysts, and tumours.

If your wisdom teeth are giving you trouble—and even if they aren’t—it’s a good idea to have them inspected via a full mouth panoramic x-ray (OPG) to see where they are, what they’re doing, and whether they should be removed to eliminate potential problems down the road.

Should your wisdom teeth need to be addressed, Dr. Soulos will assess their position and manage them appropriately. In some cases, patients must be referred to an oral surgeon for a day-surgery procedure but after-care can be handled right here at KB Village Dental where our passion for keeping your wisdom teeth-wise never ends.
