At KB Village Dental, We Help Alleviate Life-Threatening Sleep Breathing Disorders Including Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
A potentially life-threatening sleep disorder, sleep apnoea is characterized by the cessation of breathing during sleep. Lasting from several seconds to minutes, sleep apnoea can occur thirty or more times every hour.
Common signs of obstructive sleep apnoea include snoring, cruel early morning headaches, drowsiness during the daytime, and insomnia. Fortunately, dentists are equipped to treat sleep apnoea in some circumstances.
Dr. Soulos works closely with medical physicians to diagnose the types of sleep apnoea patients may be suffering. In this capacity, the specialist will rate the severity of the condition so the correct treatment can offered. Depending on the diagnosis and on patient tolerance, a breathing machine may be required, but at times an easy to use oral appliance can be fitted by Dr. Soulos to correct the condition.
SomnoDent is a custom-made oral appliance that is worn at night by patients who are diagnosed with mild to moderate sleep apnoea. SomnoDent consists of separate upper and lower plates which are worn together.
This appliance is also referred to as a Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS) because it works by holding the lower jaw and tongue forward when lying down to help ensure that airways remain open.
