Wisdom Teeth

People get their wisdom teeth very late, much in their adulthood. The name sounds wise, but wisdom teeth are not pleasantly welcomed by many. The wisdom teeth are the late bloomers of your teeth set and are formed at the end of your teeth fixed, in the back of your mouth. As they break through the gum, they can be very painful and often get impacted and cause discomfort to the entire mouth. Many times, this impact worsens and turns infectious. In this case, the dentists in North Sydney recommend getting it removed. KB Village Dental experts treat these wisdom teeth with the utmost care. Should the need be felt, they are removed almost without any pain with modern equipment and anesthetic techniques.

Wisdom Teeth Aren’t Always Wisely Positioned

We call them wisdom teeth because they are the last of your adult teeth to erupt, usually between the ages of 17 and 25 (when you are expected to start displaying some wisdom!). The problem with wisdom teeth (called ‘third molars’ in dental circles) is that they’re located at the back of your mouth in both top and bottom jaws, and in many cases, there simply isn’t enough room back there to accommodate them. In other cases, they come through horizontally instead of vertically and can become destructive. When ‘impacted’ like this, they can lead to infection, cysts, and tumours.

If your wisdom teeth are giving you trouble- and even if they aren’t- it’s a good idea to have them inspected via a full mouth panoramic x-ray (OPG) to see where they are, what they’re doing and whether they should be removed to eliminate potential problems down the road.

Should your wisdom teeth need to be addressed, Dr. Evan will assess their position and manage them appropriately. Sometimes, patients must be referred to an oral surgeon for a day-surgery procedure, but Dr Evan can provide after-care here at KB Village Dental on Sydney’s Lower North Shore.
